Paul joined Weightmans in 1988, qualifying as
a solicitor that year. He was made an associate in 1992 and a
partner in 1996 and is head of the Large Loss and Technical claims
team in Manchester. His main practice area is defendant insurance
litigation, specialising in catastrophic injuries, technical claims
and matters of policy interpretation. Paul acts for a number of
major insurers and the MIB and has secured numerous settlements
with junior and leading counsel including a significant number of
periodical payment cases.
He has been handling Large Loss work
exclusively since 2001 and has been involved in lectures and
seminars covering key areas of Large Loss handling. He has
considerable experience over a number of years of conducting Joint
Settlement Meetings with Claimants’ counsel, including settlements
negotiated on the basis of periodical payments. In March 2010 Paul
was involved in what is thought to be the only case so far approved
by the courts involving a periodical payment for care and case
management linked to a foreign based index (France).
He is listed in Chambers where he is
highlighted as showing an “excellent grasp of complex
issues” with “careful attention to detail
underpinning a commercial and strategic overview”.
