Law firm’s health and safety manager takes place on IOSH council
A health, safety and environment manager at law firm Weightmans
LLP has been elected to the council of the Institution of
Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), the biggest professional
health and safety organisation in the world.
Nick Wilson has been with Weightmans for four
years and specialises in advising clients and the firm itself on
health and safety regulations. He will hold the position on the
Council for three years, and his duties will include electing the
presidential team, approving the appointments of various Committees
and approving Regulations made by the Board of Trustees in the
role.
Nick says he is honoured to join the IOSH
Council and is looking forward to undertaking his duties at what is
undoubtedly a busy time for the Institute.
He says: “This is a crucial time for the
health and safety industry. The publication of Lord Young’s review
into health and safety legislation is sure to turn the spotlight on
to the issues surrounding workplace safety – the role of IOSH has
never been more important.”
Lord Young’s review is expected to include
recommendations that limit the UK’s ‘compensation culture’;
protecting public organisations such as the NHS from excessive
fines by capping the costs claimants can recover from defendants,
and exempting the emergency services from prosecutions for
breaching health and safety rules when helping others or to stop
crime.
“The implementation of Lord Young’s proposals
could potentially have a dramatic effect both on the work of
regulatory lawyers and on the work of IOSH. The coming months will
certainly be busy for me in both respects,” says Nick.
