The dream of business success captures the imagination of aspiring and existing business owners everywhere and in this issue of On Balance we focus on just what it takes to make it happen.

Embracing diversity has proved to be a common denominator in successful businesses, and many senior leadership roles in the largest companies are filled by women. Many thanks to Penny Haslam, founder of PHEW, Teresa Budworth, CEO at NEBOSH and Alison Littley, non-executive director here at Weightmans for sharing their thoughts and experiences.

High quality job creation is a key driver for the UK economy and in an upbeat interview on page 4, Shulah Jones, Project Director for Port Academy Liverpool explains how Hugh Baird College has launched a specialised academy to train an army of skilled workers for thousands of newly created opportunities.

With Weightmans recently having opened an office in Scotland for the first time, our firm took a particular interest in this year’s Commonwealth Games. As Bryan Finlayson explains on page 18 the success of the Games has already extended far beyond medals, with the feel-good factor helping to deliver business growth in Glasgow and beyond.

Sometimes the less obvious factors play an important part in business success. On page 8 Simon Colvin explains the need to be environmentally conscious, while on page 16 Emma Collins talks about minimising the business impact of relationship breakdowns.

Other articles in this issue cover the value of business succession planning in achieving a successful sale, navigating the litigation minefield and the importance of health and safety in the workplace.

We hope you enjoy the read. As ever, if you have any thoughts, comments or feedback please let us know.
