A prominent family lawyer has offered advice to couples seeking to separate as her firm sees more enquiries in the first week of 2018 than they would receive in an ordinary month.
National law firm Weightmans has already received more than its monthly average of enquiries regarding divorce, separation and disputes relating to children since offices reopened on 2 January – with an increase of 166% compared to the whole of December 2017.
Louise Walker, Family Law Specialist at national law firm Weightmans said:
“The first working Monday of a new year has become known as ‘Divorce Day’, thanks to the spike in couples deciding to seek legal advice and call it a day after the festive season. For the most part couples that make the difficult decision to separate in the New Year do not take the decision lightly - inevitably one or the other will have spent several months considering the potential consequences of a separation. Many will have chosen to delay ending their relationship so the children can enjoy their family Christmas. Some have made arrangements to take legal advice as soon as the festive season had ended.
“We do not underestimate the anguish that leads people to our door but for anyone considering separation it is vital for them to take legal advice sooner rather than later - not just on ‘Divorce Day’.
“The law and financial issues that arise on separation are more sensitive and complex than the internet leads people to believe and operating in the absence of practical and sensible legal advice can often cause more problems than it solves. A good family lawyer will help you work through your options at a pace that is comfortable for you, and give you the tools you need to make the best long term decisions for you and your family.”
