Today the Law Commission released its consultation on the measures needed to ensure the successful development of autonomous vehicles. This work will be crucial in examining how current driving laws – designed with traditional motoring in mind – can support the next generation of vehicles.
Kurt Rowe, Associate and member of the Weightmans Motor Technology Group said:
"This is perhaps the widest ranging consultation on such a rapidly-evolving issue and we welcome the opportunity to help shape the future of transport in this country, and perhaps even globally.
"We believe that the key issues from both a consumer and a commercial/insurance perspective are liability, vehicle security and safety, and access to the data that the vehicles collate to ensure a quick and accurate determination of liability.
"We are therefore concerned to see that issues of data protection, theft and cyber security are out of scope of this consultation - the development of the legal framework for autonomous vehicles cannot be progressed in isolation of these key issues and we will be addressing this point in our response to the consultation."
Weightmans will be hosting a series of regional roundtables to discuss the issues and the implications. To register your interest or to discuss your own consultation response please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
