Manchester Lawyer takes on ultra-marathon for charity

Brian Ghatan clocked up 47 miles in a bid to raise money for charity close to his heart.

A real estate lawyer from national law firm Weightmans completed a 75km trail ultra-marathon last week to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK.

On the 14 May, Weightmans Partner Brian Ghatan competed in THE LAP, a trail ultra marathon circumnavigating Windermere, England's largest lake in memory of his father who succumbed to prostate cancer in 2016. He placed  89th out of 391 participants, finishing in just over 12 hours having also climbed over 2500 metres of elevation in total.

Brian has so far raised over £1100, which could fund 55 hours of clinical research to test new ways of preventing, treating, and diagnosing prostate cancer.

Today (19 May), Weightmans is holding an awareness day for staff, with a clinical education session on prostate cancer in conjunction with healthcare providers Cigna.

He said:

“Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, taking the lives of over 11,500 men a year. It often doesn’t involve any symptoms until it’s too late, so it’s important we all know what to look out for and most importantly, to seek medical advice if we are concerned.

“The LAP was tough but was also a fantastic experience and amazingly well organised. I am pleased to have finished in a good time and to have raised much-needed funds for Prostate Cancer UK, as well as awareness of the disease by sharing my story and goal with colleagues across the firm.”
