A commercial litigator from law firm Weightmans has completed the Abbott World Marathon Majors from his home on his treadmill with the support of his family after his sixth and final marathon in Boston was cancelled and rearranged virtually.
From running through the iconic five boroughs in New York to pounding the rainy streets of Tokyo, Partner Damian Carter from the firm’s Manchester office has travelled the world and experienced a variety of cultures, climates, and emotions whilst running over 157 miles in six marathons in Europe, Asia and America since 2014.
In April 2020 he was set to complete the Abbott World Marathon Majors, taking part in the sixth and final race of the series on Patriots Day in Boston, USA. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic this was postponed to September and then cancelled in favour of a virtual marathon.
Damian completed the marathon in 3:42:15 and received his medal from Boston last month, but plans to travel to the city to complete the actual course in 2022 and collect the coveted six star medal which is awarded to marathon runners who complete all six world major marathons. SO far, only 6000 people globally are ‘six star finishers’, with 664 in the UK.
Damian, who runs for local club Macclesfield Harriers, has so far raised over £11,000 for Alzheimer’s Research and other charities including Hopkinton Center for the Arts.
“After training for this final marathon for months, the news that it was postponed and then cancelled was disappointing, but of course entirely understandable given world events. I am grateful that runners were given the option to complete the race virtually, however nothing can compare to the real thing - I will continue to raise money for charities close to my heart and I’m looking forward to taking my place on the start line in Boston come April 2022.”
