Weightmans makes expert competition litigation hire

National law firm Weightmans has welcomed competition litigation expert Tristan Feunteun to its London office.

National law firm Weightmans has welcomed competition litigation expert Tristan Feunteun to its London office, as the firm continues to grow its national specialism in cartel damages actions.

Tristan joins the firm as a Partner from AIM-listed litigation funder Burford Capital, where he was a Vice President in its global underwriting and investment arm.

Prior to his time at Burford Capital, Tristan was Associate and Director of Case Development in the Competition Litigation team at Stewarts Law.

Working with clients across the corporate and public sectors, he is experienced in helping to secure multi-million pound recoveries for clients. These clients have suffered serious financial losses, caused by complex and typically multi-jurisdictional instances of corporate wrong-doing perpetrated by their suppliers or competitors.

Tristan has been involved with both litigating and funding the litigation of cartel damages actions for a decade. He has worked on several ground-breaking cases, most recently the iiyama and interchange fees cases. The iiyama cases, arising from the LCD and CRT cartels, helped expand the territorial scope of purchases that can be included by claimants in such cases before English courts. The interchange fees cases, brought by a variety of British retailers against MasterCard and Visa, helped clarify several of the key building blocks of competition litigation in England, such as disclosure and limitation. England remains the forum of choice in Europe for bringing UK-based and Europe-wide cartel damages actions.

Tristan trained at Freshfields, and has also worked as a lawyer in Belgium and the Netherlands. He has degrees from the London School of Economics, Cambridge and Oxford.

Tim Lang, Weightmans Partner and Head of Corporates said:

“Tristan is an exceptionally bright and perceptive lawyer, with a wealth of experience in competition litigation and achieving recoveries for victims of illegal anti-competitive behaviour. His work and background complements our activity and client focus perfectly and he will be a great asset to our growing competition litigation offering.”

Tristan said:

“Weightmans is a firm renowned for providing good quality, robust and commercial advice. I am looking forward to being part of such a strong team and contributing to the further growth of the practice.”
