Weightmans makes waves with water industry expert

National law firm Weightmans has welcomed one of the top lawyers in the water industry as the firm continues to grow its energy and utilities…

Clive Mottram joins the firm as a Consultant, based in the firm’s Birmingham office but with a national remit. Previously Legal Director and Head of Water Regulation at Eversheds Sutherland, Clive has 35 years’ experience in the water sector, both in-house and in private practice.

Clive specialises in regulatory and operational matters affecting the water industry. Spending just over two decades at Severn Trent Water, he worked on a wide range of commercial and corporate issues and provided specialist advice on the regulatory provisions governing the sector, eventually becoming General Counsel with a team of 40 people across the Midlands.

During this time, Clive was recognised by leading legal directories Chambers & Partners and Legal 500, commended for his significant experience in and knowledge of the water industry.

In private practice, Clive not only works with clients in the water sector, but also advises businesses in other sectors looking for advice on their obligations around water and wastewater law and regulation.

Clive said:

“Regulation in the water sector is increasing, and the demands on water companies continue to grow as time goes on. It is my role to help organisations understand the risks and responsibilities around these requirements and help them navigate the subtleties of water-related law.

"I am delighted to join Weightmans – the firm already acts for a number of water companies and understands the changing landscape that they face. I look forward to helping them develop this practice further, providing advice and support to ensure that we are continuing to provide exceptional client service.”

Partner and Head of the Energy and Utilities Sector at Weightmans Simon Colvin said:

“Clive has an incredibly detailed understanding of the industry, current legislation and of how regulators operate. His experience both in-house and in private practice means he has truly been at the front and centre of developments during a transformative period for the sector. He recognises the pressures companies in this area face, as well as understanding the opportunities available to them – we look forward to working closely with Clive to grow our capabilities and ensure we remain at the forefront of industry developments.”
