Biography

Emelia joined Weightmans’ casualty team in July 2023 as an Associate based predominantly in the Manchester office and she specialises in defending civil actions pursued against the police.

Emelia has dealt with a variety of threatened and litigated civil claims for various police forces involving a multitude of issues such as false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, data breaches, and assault/battery. She has also acted in claims pursued under the Human Rights Act 1998 and the Equality Act 2010.

Emelia enjoys legal research and being up to date with the most recent and relevant case law / legal developments and enjoys writing articles covering the same. Emelia is a regular contributor to external publications and has written for Local Government Lawyer, ALARM Stronger, Police Professional and the Solicitors Journal on a number of occasions. Emelia has written on a number of topics relevant to public authorities and police forces, but has had a particular focus on the evolving area of public order policing and the associated legislation together with trends identified in police law precedents as and when they’re handed down.

Emelia has also dealt with a number of claims involving the rising trend of auditing and has delivered training on this topic directly to police force professional standards departments.
