Nichola is a healthcare regulatory partner and national lead for healthcare inquests.

Nichola is a highly experienced healthcare regulatory lawyer with particular expertise in healthcare inquests, coronial law, NHS governance, patient safety, clinical risk and healthcare investigations.

Before returning to Weightmans, Nichola spent more than a decade in senior NHS leadership roles, including General Counsel at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Associate Director of Legal Services, Associate Director of Quality Governance and Patient Safety, and Head of Legal Services. Her experience advising NHS Boards and executive teams gives her a unique understanding of the legal, operational and reputational challenges facing healthcare organisations today.

Nichola provides pragmatic and learning-focussed advice to NHS Trusts, independent healthcare providers and other health and care organisations on healthcare regulation, healthcare inquests, coronial investigations, CQC matters, patient safety issues, internal investigations, clinical governance and board-level risk management. She is particularly recognised for helping organisations navigate complex inquests involving significant legal, regulatory and reputational risk while ensuring that learning, assurance and governance opportunities are identified and implemented.

As lead for Weightmans' healthcare inquest practice, Nichola has strategic responsibility for the development, governance and quality assurance of healthcare inquest work across the firm. She works closely with colleagues across healthcare claims, professional regulation, public inquiries and advisory services to deliver a coordinated service for clients where inquests intersect with claims, CQC engagement, professional discipline, patient safety investigations or wider organisational scrutiny.

Nichola regularly speaks and writes on healthcare inquests, Prevention of Future Death reports, clinical governance, patient safety learning and evolving coronial practice. She is a Director of Liverpool Law Society, has sat on the Law Society’s In-House Network Advisory Committee and is a former Trustee of the UK Clinical Ethics Network.
