Thomas Toyne is a Principal Associate in Weightmans Healthcare team, based in the Cardiff office.
Thomas has more than a decade of experience as a solicitor in healthcare law with his primary focus being clinical negligence. Thomas specialises in acting for NHS organisations in complex and high value litigation, including catastrophic injury claims such as brain injury (adult and child), spinal injury, and amputation cases.
Thomas is also experienced in public inquiry work (UK Covid-19 Inquiry), Inquests and Human Rights Act claims.
Thomas has significant management and supervision experience and takes great enjoyment from working with junior lawyers and assisting in their development.
LMN v Swansea Bay University Health Board [2025] EWHC 3402 (KB)
Thomas Toyne acted for Swansea Bay University Health Board at Trial in circumstances where the claimant was profoundly asphyxiated at birth and suffered ischaemic brain damage with four limb cerebral palsy and permanent neurological disability. The claim was successfully defended in respect of both breach of duty and causation.

Thomas Toyne acted for Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board in a high-profile appeal concerning the court’s power to grant an anonymity order in a clinical negligence claim brought by a vulnerable child suffering from cerebral palsy where there was already material concerning the claim in the public domain. The Health Board remained neutral on the appeal.
