Learn how US global entry helps frequent travellers skip immigration queues, who can apply, the costs, interview process and key benefits.
What is global entry?
Global entry (GE) is a fantastic US program that allows approved international travellers to bypass regular border inspection queues, saving time and reducing the stress of clearing immigration. Just scan your face at a GE kiosk and sail past the crowd.
Who is eligible?
In addition to US citizens and lawful permanent residents, citizens of these countries may be eligible:
Argentina
Australia
Brazil
Bahrain
Colombia
Costa Rica
Croatia
Dominican Republic
El Salvador
Germany
India
Japan
Jordan
Mexico (nationals)
The Netherlands
Panama
Singapore
South Korea
Switzerland
Taiwan
United Arab Emirates
United Kingdom
Some nationals, such as UK citizens, may obtain global entry for travel with a visa stamp or with a valid ESTA; however, some nationals, such as Australians, may only obtain GE for travel on a valid visa stamp.
Who should not apply?
If you have ever had a negative encounter with law enforcement (e.g., an arrest) or immigration (e.g., a refusal of entry, deportation, or a visa denial) in any country, have been denied for the purchase of a firearm, or are otherwise inadmissible to the United States, you are unlikely to be approved. The program is for “low-risk” travellers.
How do I apply for global entry?
The application involves completing a background check and submitting an application through the Trusted Traveler Program website. An in-person interview at a US global entry facility is required and then a final determination is made to approve or deny the membership.
The background screening process is different depending on the applicant’s country of nationality. Please refer to the US Customs and Border Protection country list for specifics.
As a representative example, a UK national would submit an initial application online to the UK government for a domestic background check (GBP £42 in 2026). Once approved, they would proceed to the Trusted Traveler Program website to submit the GE application and pay the application processing fee ($120 in 2026). Once conditionally approved, they would schedule an interview at a GE Enrollment Center or use the Enrollment on Arrival option. After the interview, CBP would send a final determination electronically.
This is one of the few US immigration processes that is user-friendly.
What happens at the interview?
The interview is a risk assessment. The interviewing official may ask questions related to personal circumstances, such as employment history, family, and residential history. They will review US and foreign travel history and compliance, and address any derogatory information produced through the background check. It is the job of these officials to ensure that the traveller is truly low risk.
How long does it take to complete the application process?
Most standard applications are completed within 4-6 months.
How long is global entry valid?
Membership is issued in 5-year increments and may be extended.
What else do I need to know?
If your name or visa changes, you should visit a global entry office to update your records
GE membership has an ancillary benefit of TSA PreCheck eligibility. This means that participants may use the special queue at security in US airports, as long as they have added their GE membership number in the airline reservation.
Travelers who are members of SENTRI or NEXUS are also eligible to use GE.
