The summer of 2026 saw a series of heatwaves that brought exceptional and sustained warmth to the UK. With this came the driest July on record, with more than half of England and all of Wales entering drought conditions. Inevitably public water supplies saw acute pressure with temporary use bans (hosepipe bans) remaining in place across large parts of England and continued requests from water companies for drought powers, including drought permits and orders.
Pressure upon water resources will continue caused by climate change, growing population, emerging technologies and need to protect environment. So much so that by 2055 England faces 5 billion litre a day shortfall for public water supplies and a further 1 billion litre a day deficit for wider economy. Water scarcity is an emerging risk impacting a number of businesses across a variety of sectors.
