Maternity and neonatal patient safety remain key priorities for the NHS. Recent measures to drive improvements in patient care and safety include the government’s launch the National Maternity and Neonatal Investigation, led by Baroness Amos, in August 2025, as well as the introduction of a raft of new initiatives, including £11 million funding for trusts to improve maternity triage services, institution of the Maternity Outcomes Signal System, a standardised maternal care bundle and national roll out of Martha's rule to maternity services.
However, significant improvement in maternity and neonatal care will only be achieved if everyone continues to play their part in working together to identify patient safety concerns and to take action to prevent recurrence.
NHS Resolution recognises this and that is why improving maternity and neonatal patient safety by learning from claims is one of its key strategic priorities.
Weightmans is also communicating learning from claims to help trusts deliver high-quality care now and drive improvement for the benefit of women, babies, families and staff in the future. As part of our ‘Maternity Matters’ campaign, the Healthcare Team at Weightmans has created a series of pods relating to the key issues in maternity and neonatal claims. You can watch the pods by clicking on the links below.
