Emma Collins

Emma heads the Services for Individuals segment at Weightmans, which includes the private client and family teams, advising individuals on both their personal and professional affairs. The family team has been consistently ranked in the Northwest Top Tier of the Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners as a team which "has a 'strong, reliable and intelligent team that looks to achieve the right result for the client'."

With over 30 years practising exclusively in family law, Emma is regularly instructed by her fellow solicitors, members of the bar and the judiciary, as well as many other professionals including consultants and accountants. Business owners frequently instruct Emma in cases involving complex corporate structures and interplay between trusts, offshore investments and pensions, appreciating her commercial understanding and approach to business issues within relationship breakdown. Her caseload regularly involves multi-million pound asset bases.

Emma advises on all aspects of relationship breakdown — divorce, dissolution of civil partnerships and cohabitation, as well as pre and post nuptial agreements, Inheritance Act claims and matters relating to the children of the family. Emma has particular expertise in factually and legally complex financial remedy and cohabitation claims including those involving on and offshore trusts.

Emma is committed to finding dispute resolutions for her clients in a constructive and sensitive manner which is most appropriate for them, whether that is outside court through round table negotiations, mediation, collaborative practice, arbitration or other process or within the court arena.

Clients describe her as 'professional, caring and highly skilled'.

Emma is a long-standing member and former chair of the Resolution Publication/Drafting Committee, contributing to such publications as the Consent Order Precedents, Separation and Prenuptial Agreements and Cohabitation Agreement precedents. Most recently she contributed to and wrote the introduction for the Cohabitation Separation Agreement Precedents. She is also the author of the Inheritance Act chapter in the Resolution Family Law Handbook, most recently contributing to the third edition in 2020 with colleagues Matthew Morton and Lottie Tyler.

Emma is an active member of the Resolution Cohabitation Committee which advises on the law and best practice as well as lobbying government for positive change in family law. She is an accredited family specialist on the Resolution Panel (Advanced Financial Provision II and Cohabitation); a trained collaborative lawyer; a Resolution trained mentor and the former treasurer of Manchester Area Resolution.
