Matthew Jones

Matthew recently joined Weightmans’ Speciality Team in Manchester as a Principal Associate.

Having qualified in September 2016, Matthew has developed a focus on policy coverage work spanning the breadth of commercial insurance — providing discrete advice on the scope of cover afforded by policies and inputting on issues relevant to voidance or the declinature of claims. More recently, this has captured COVID-19 business interruption claims.

Matthew is also experienced in pursuing and defending property damage and construction matters.

Notable cases

• FM Conway Ltd v The Rugby Football Union [2023] EWCA Civ 418 — Acted on behalf of the Appellant in the widely-cited Court of Appeal judgment on the extent of co-insurance and subrogation;
• Acted on behalf of various insurer clients in the defence of first party COVID-19 business interruption claims. These varied from modestly valued claims by SMEs to significant, double-digit million pound claims on behalf of multi-national businesses;
• Pursued a successful claim on behalf of an insurer client in respect of reinsuring obligations of a coverholder. The claim settled satisfactorily at mediation for c.£3 million; and
• Pursued a successful £2 million subrogated recovery claim following a fire at a well-known restaurant chain.
