The trainee solicitor role: SQE pathway
The SQE pathway is for those who have completed their law degree, or those who have completed a non-law degree and the PGDL (or equivalent).
To gain qualification as a solicitor you require a degree, the solicitors qualifying examinations (SQE) 1&2 and a minimum of two years work experience. Our graduate programme has been designed to support you through this pathway by providing excellent on the job experience at Weightmans across four seats, and, working with our partner BPP University Law School, ensuring you have the best support available through the SQE1&2.
This programme requires you to study and pass your SQE1 before joining the firm where you will then go on to complete two years of qualifying work experience (QWE) in a range of teams.
How and when will I study the SQE if I am successful in my application?
Our trainees will be guaranteed a place to study towards the SQE1&2 at BPP University Law School. As we recruit two years in advance, you can choose to prepare for the SQE1 on a full time or part time basis before joining us to gain your qualifying work experience (QWE). You will then sit SQE2 when you have gained some on-the-job experience with the firm.
Will I need to pay for the SQE1&2?
No. The examinations and preparatory courses are fully funded by Weightmans if you are successful in securing a position as trainee solicitor.
What qualifications do I need to apply?
You will require a law degree or a non-law degree and PGDL (or equivalent) before you commence your SQE studies. Therefore, you can apply for the role from your second year of your three-year law degree or the final year of your non law degree.
Salary and benefits
For year one as a trainee solicitor, you would receive a salary of £29,000 (£36,000 London), which will increase after 12 months to £31,000 (£38,000 London). As a Weightmans employee, you will also be entitled to our excellent staff benefits including:

Stage 1 — Written application
At this stage, we will look at your academic grades and your answer to an open question. This question is designed to check your understanding of how a law firm, and Weightmans, works. We will also assess structure, depth, punctuation and grammar. The quality of your answer will determine if you progress to the next stage, we therefore suggest you spend some time on this and proofread before submitting. We will review all written submissions individually, in a blind marking process.
Applications are open from Monday 3 November 2025 to Thursday 15 January 2026 at 4pm. Please note, we are unable to accept any application passed this deadline.
Stage 2 — HIPO-I interactive online assessment
If you are successful at the written application stage, you will then be invited to complete an online assessment called the HIPO-I. This assessment has been designed to test verbal and numerical reasoning, along with some situational judgement questions, to assess if our values align.
Stage 3 — Virtual Interview
If you are successful at the HIPO-I assessment, you will be invited to attend a virtual interview with a member of HR and a Partner or Principal Associate from the Firm. The interview will be conducted via Zoom and will include a presentation. Virtual interviews will take place on the following weeks:
Week commencing Monday 9 March 2026
Week commencing Monday 16 March 2026
Please note, there will be no other dates available.
Stage 4 — Assessment centre
If you are successful at the virtual interview stage, you will then be invited to attend an assessment centre. This will consist of two parts:
a group exercise
a written exercise
Before you attend an assessment centre, you will also be given the opportunity to attend a briefing session delivered by our Early Careers team. This is not an assessed meeting but is an opportunity for the team to answer any questions you may have, we will then walk you through the day giving you some tips on how best to prepare. You will also be provided with a written brief so that you can be as prepared as possible for the day. Assessment centres will take place on the following weeks:
Week commencing Monday 13 April 2026
Week commencing Monday 20 April 2026
Please note, there will be no other dates available.
We welcome you to contact us if you have any queries regarding this process.
