Consultation on the safe use of Automated Lane Keeping Systems (ALKS)

The consultation on the safe use of Automated Lane Keeping Systems (ALKS) is open until 27 October 2020.

The introduction of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) has the potential to significantly reduce the frequency and severity of collisions.

As such, the motor claims industry should welcome the consultation on the safe use of Automated Lane Keeping Systems (ALKS) recently announced by the Government. However, the announcement suggests that consideration is being given to allowing the driver to cede control of the vehicle at speeds up to 70 mph, whilst requiring the driver to be in a position to resume driving in certain scenarios. This creates a number of concerns from both a legal and insurance perspective, which need to be considered and addressed before such systems are authorised for use on UK roads.

The consultation is open until 27 October 2020. Weightmans will be preparing a response and if you would like access to this draft document to assist in your own responses, or if you would simply like to contribute to our response, please provide your details below.
