The Department for Transport has published statistics for fatally injured persons during 2023 using the STATS 19 data of road casualties reported by the police.
The main finding shows that in 2023:
- Car occupants accounted for 45% of road users killed in Great Britain more than any other road user group, which is unsurprising as cars account for the majority of traffic on Britain’s roads.
- Vulnerable road users (motorcyclists 19%; pedal cyclists 5% and pedestrians 25%) together accounted for around 50% of fatalities.
- Cars were the vehicle type most often in fatal collisions where other road users were killed.
- Per passenger mile HGVs have the highest rate of other road user fatalities.
