James specialises in the defence of claims against investment intermediaries, insurance brokers and construction professionals. Whilst the majority of those claims concern instructions received from insurers, James also acts directly for commercial and private clients in both the financial services and construction/engineering sectors.

He is particularly well-known for his understanding of financial products, investment vehicles and specialist legal and regulatory issues arising from allegedly negligent advice and conduct in the financial services field.

James regularly advises in relation to insurance coverage issues arising from professional services and construction claims.

James acted for the defendant financial advisers in FSCS v Larnell [2005] EWCA Civ 1408, for the Part 20 claimant insurance broker in Fisk v Brian Thornhill & Son (A Firm) [2007] EWCA Civ 152 and for the defendant estate agents in Venulum Property Investment Ltd v Space Architecture Ltd and others [2013] EWHC 1242 (TCC).

James also contributes to the discussion of legal and insurance developments in the press, including cyber insurance and data breach issues.
