Biography

Phillip is ranked as a "Rising Star", "Key Lawyer" and "Recommended" in The Legal 500 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Phillip is a Principal Associate who specialises in catastrophic personal injury claims for major insurers, run off agents and the Motor Insurers’ Bureau. Phillip has a particular interest in cases involving complex liability and indemnity disputes. Phillip specialises in cases involving maximum severity brain damage, amputations and complex rehabilitation issues. Phillip is respected throughout the industry by both claimants and defendants for taking a pragmatic approach to cases, whilst being very robust when required.

Phillip is the lead assistant to Elaine Chapman, Head of Large Loss and Technical, London and has day to day conduct of her most complex and highest value cases. Phillip has advised on reserves in excess of £200M million. The highest value case he has been involved with was pleaded at £32M.

Phillip was nominated for The Law Society Junior Lawyer of the Year 2021 and receives regular high praise from clients and barristers. Stephen Worthington QC and Patrick Vincent QC recently described Phillip’s contribution on a particularly difficult case as “nothing less than outstanding”.

Some of Phillip’s recent work highlights include defending a £22M road traffic claim in full and settling three paraplegic claims claimed in excess of £10M each. Phillip’s current case load is valued in excess of £140M and he has saved insurers more than £150M on the pleaded value of cases during his career. Phillip has also represented a respondent in the Court of Appeal.

Phillip is also involved with the development and roll out of Weightmans’ predictive analytics tool, PREDiCT.

Phillip is a rehabilitation champion and recently delivered Weightmans’ flagship monthly Large Loss training session on rehabilitation. Phillip has also written articles published by Weightmans on increased care costs, the Ogden 8 changes, occupiers liability and passenger contributory negligence.

Phillip is currently Weightmans’ lead on automated vehicles and will be delivering training on e-scooters in Autumn 2022.
