The spending review on 11 June will be the first multi-year spending review since 2021.
We already know the wider picture or “spending envelope” which is the overall maximum spend but it is how this is divided up between departments that we will get the detail on next week.
We already know billions will be going to defence and health. If the big increases are allocated there then it reduces the amount other departments can receive, to ensure we keep within the spending envelope. Police forces have also set out that they need much more investment in order to hit their priority objectives, especially around protection of violence against women and girls.
Many predict the government will target large capital projects – and it will be interesting to see the repercussions if that’s the case. Ultimately, will people vote for a party based on their daily priorities of capped bus fares and potholes – or large scale defence projects?
We will know more detail on this government’s priorities on 11 June.
