Alan is a Partner in our construction and engineering team based in our Newcastle office. He has specialised in construction law since 2005, supporting the development of major projects advising public and private sector clients.

Alan is widely regarded as a non-contentious construction specialist, having advised on a number of key infrastructure and regeneration projects throughout the UK, the Republic of Ireland and the Channel Islands. He has also advised on various biomass, energy from waste, subsea electricity cabling, and oil and gas related energy projects.

Alan advises on the drafting and negotiation of all major national and international industry standard and bespoke forms of construction and engineering contracts (JCT, NEC, ICE, LOGIC, MF/1, FIDIC, IChemE, PPC 2000), professional appointments, novation agreements, warranties, bonds and guarantees and other associated project documents.

Alan is recognised as a ‘Next Generation Partner’ in the 2026 Chambers and Partners UK guide.

Examples of his recent relevant experience include:

  • Advising a Council on the Pre-Contract Services Agreements and NEC3 building contract for a new circa £40m high-level footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists over a River and a new circa £60m eye hospital for the local NHS Trust — the Council will be landlord and the Trust will be the tenant.
  • Acting for the development subsidiary company of a County Council regarding the drafting and negotiation of the FIDIC Yellow Book engineering contract in respect of a £30m marine dock extension at a Port.
  • Representing a County Council and their development company regarding the JCT contracts, professional team appointments, novations, collateral warranties, bonds and guarantees for two new build leisure centres, circa £40m, a cultural facility and educational learning hub facility adjacent to a Port, funded through the Future High Street programme, circa £30m, a £7m town centre retail park and various housing developments.
  • Advising a Borough Council and Combined Authority on the circa £100m redevelopment of its train station. Advised in relation to the APA with Network Rail and the NEC3 construction documents in respect of the contractor appointed off the Scape framework.
  • Representing a privately owned port on the in respect of the FIDIC Silver Book engineering contract for the circa £500m new quay to be constructed as part of an Energy Park for offshore wind manufacturers.
  • Acting for a national contractor in relation to high value leisure and mixed-use developments including £190m of PRS residential developments in London, an £85m commercial scheme in Edinburgh and a £92m scheme in Birmingham comprising a residential tower and hotel.
  • Advising an electricity company in relation to the FIDIC and MF/1 contracts for a €55m project for submarine and land-based electricity cables that form part of the Channel Islands electricity grid.
